The man power survey presented at the Consultant and SpR session at DUK highlighted that in the UK in 2010, 2011 and 2012 there will be 85, 83 and 74 trainees attaining their CCT respectively. However there are only 4, 16 and 23 consultants will be approaching retirement age of 65 years in the same respective years. This is alarming given that previous attempts to expand consultant numbers and restrict trainee numbers have been unsuccessful. Rowan Hillson is concerned about this consultant job shortage and has approached the YDF to help her address this on a national scale.
The plan is to gather information on what is actually happening to people once they get their CCT. Over the past few years:
By gathering this data the Department of Health will be able to describe our predicament in more detail and hopefully use this as leverage to ensure consultant posts are created and our training not wasted. This is increasingly crucial as the acute medicine trainees start to approach CCT, taking most of the acute medicine posts which some of our earlier colleagues have been reliant on for employment. A group of diabetes SpRs have volunteered to work on the post-CCT team to gather information on a national scale. We will shortly be asking CCT holders for information to inform the project.
